Dorn G. Bishop is “of counsel” to our firm. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, a former prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office, a former partner in a leading international law firm (Latham & Watkins), and a veteran trial lawyer who has successfully tried many cases to juries.
With more than thirty-two years of experience, and having been both a federal prosecutor and a partner in a global law firm, Mr. Bishop brings an uncommon level of skill and experience to his representation of clients in both civil and criminal matters. In addition, he has been recognized by The San Diego Daily Transcript and San Diego Metro Magazine as one of San Diego’s “Top Attorneys.”
Mr. Bishop’s litigation background includes courtroom experience in both the private and public sectors. He is AV Peer Review Rated by The Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, the highest recognition given to an attorney for legal professionalism, expertise, and integrity. In addition, he has been recognized by local publications as one of San Diego’s top insurance coverage attorneys and criminal defense lawyers.
Mr. Bishop graduated phi beta kappa with Highest Honors from Dartmouth College in 1986. He then attended the University of Chicago Law School, where he served as an editor of its Law Review. Following graduation, Mr. Bishop served as a federal judicial clerk in Philadelphia for the Honorable Jay C. Waldman.
Mr. Bishop moved to San Diego in 1990, where he spent the next ten years working for Latham & Watkins, one of the world’s premier law firms. First as an associate and then as a partner, Mr. Bishop represented clients in a wide range of insurance coverage, commercial, and environmental matters. From 1997 to 2001, Mr. Bishop served as head of the San Diego Insurance Practice Group, where he successfully represented Montrose Chemical Corporation and other policyholders in several landmark insurance cases.
Mr. Bishop left Latham & Watkins in 2001 in order to serve as Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of California. During his tenure as a federal prosecutor from 2001 through 2003, Mr. Bishop was undefeated in over twenty jury trials. His work for the United States Government included the prosecution of criminal cases involving fraud, drug smuggling, child pornography, bank robbery, assault, alien smuggling, and illegal reentry of convicted felons. He also argued several appeals on behalf of the United States before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and never had a conviction overturned.
Since opening his own law firm in 2003, Mr. Bishop’s clients have ranged from individuals and start-up companies, to governmental entities and Fortune 500 corporations. His civil practice has centered on general commercial disputes, misappropriation of trade secret claims, unfair competition, intellectual property issues, employment disputes, breach of fiduciary duty claims, and representation of policyholders in insurance coverage and bad faith disputes.

Mr. Bishop has presented numerous seminars on insurance coverage issues, and served as Chair of the Insurance Section of the San Diego County Bar Association from 1999 to 2001. He has also written articles for the San Diego Union-Tribune and several legal journals on a wide range of insurance, environmental, and business topics.
